I bought my 1.9 petrol T25 1983 at THE end of the summer and now I'm worried that it might not have anti-freeze in it. I have the following questions:
1) How I check for anti-freeze
2) How I check for G12(?) anti-freeze
3) How I check I have the right ratio (50% water)
4) Where I can get VW G12 antifreeze
can buy at GSF too, currently G12+ about £4 for 1.5 L concentrate (can mix with previous types) have a look in the header tank, could be blue (VW G11 was blue) or pink, (not rusty!) dip finger and have a sniff, (I have seen someone taste it! do you value your liver?). Draining the system involves removing the pushrod covers to get at the allen key bolts under both heads. These are held onto the exhaust, if the bolts look at all like they wont budge may be better to cut the covers off rather than snap an exhaust bolt (or take it to syncronutz at Shotts) if no coolant has been in for any length of time you may have problems in the future with corroded head bolts/radiator etc. new coolant wont fix this but may delay the enivitable. There is a type of Comma which is compatable I believe (Mocki?) and cheaper.
I've checked my header tank with anti-freeze checker and the liquid is light green. Is this anything to worry about? The checker says that it will do for -27.
light green is certainly not a colour I have seen with my limited knowledge, best get it drained and refill. have you got a haynes manual, goes through it in there.
If its light green it will be cheapo 2yr stuff---do you know how long its been in?--the antifreeze bit stays but the rust inhibitor goes with age--not good in these engines--replace it with pink 5yr stuff--VWs own G12+ or any other good brand-Comma s ok--its best to have near on 50/50 mix soyou will need 9 litres---its not a good idea to undo the engine drain plugs--detatch a couple of big pipes underneath-(remove coolant tank lid & bleed screw on rad)-not all the coolant will come out tho--you will need to flush it thru with a hose pipe-when clean water is coming out you should have about 4 litres of clean water in system--reconnect pipes(& replace any dodgy lookin ones)--get a Haynes manual tells you how to fill & bleed---
