Push rod tube seals.

Well, the engine that had been stood for 10 years and I fitted into my Westy (2.0L Aircooled) seems to be leaking oil from the push rod seals and head gasket, understandable after being stood for so long!

How much of a ball ache is this to do?

How much is it likely to cost at my local VW specialist? I hate paying someone else to do stuff I'm capable of, but these things just seem like too much trouble.

frow what i remember will take you a max 2 hours to do yourself,could take as little as 45 mins.rocker cover,rocker shaft then pull out tube,new seals 'o rings'2 per tube, refit in reverse.
should get the seals in a gasket set,or try vw or once you get an old one out match it with a local garage who should have a selection of sizes.

if the leaks are only from the pushrod seals,you can do this repair quite easy with engine in place, remove rocker cover,2 nuts that hold tappets,remove pushrods, now slide a socket extention bar back in to a rods place, get a pair of molegrips, grip tube and work free the tube,remove tube out through cylinder head. fit new seals, replace tube,pushrod,tappet,cover,... why not give it a go, seal kits are about a tenner,and you don't pay for your time!

Genuine VW seals are the only way to go IMHO, be aware that there is a large and small seal on each tube.
