intermittant temperature guage

I have a 1.9 water cooled engine, and have recently noticed my water temp guage is intermittant :( , what could cause this and would this stop the fan from coming on?
The nocturnal monochromatic furry beastie.

i'm going to replace the thermostat and g12 coolant.. :)
