Have looked at other responses on this topic, but as a newbie, can anyone tell me why I can't just nip up the road to kwikfit for a service.
Got quoted 235 + VAT by SW VW's so thinking the 135 from KwikFit seemed like a bargain.

Depends whether you want an expert to look over your van or some monkey who doesn't have a clue what he's doing.
THese old vans are not like their modern bretherin and some things on them are just damned odd! A service isn't just about changing oil, filter etc etc. THe vehicle should be inspected and any possible prblems reported back to the owner. Kwickbodge won't bother with any of that.
Take it to a specialist and pay the extra for piece of mind or do it yourself and save a wad of cash and learn some stuff along the way.

Kwik-Fit is just that - quick. I once had to remove a Beetle exhaust fitted by Kwik-Fit and its the first and last time i've seen the use of nuts with one side filed off to get oversized nuts to go on. Yep take it to at least a person with good knowledge about these - even an enthusiast is better than Kwik-Fit. They're fine for tyres I guess but not for a service.

There is a GSF (German, Swedish and French) in Brixton, go in there and see if they can recommend a local garage that knows VW's that will be able to do the work for you.
Chances are any local VW type places will use GSF on a daily basis.

kwik fit
took my 1990 high top to kwik fit this morning for new brakes as they were the only garage i could find that had high doors but they rang me later in the day to say they will have to keep it over night as they have no record of the brake pads so fingers crossed they can find the brakes! Not so kwik!

Avoid. Good advice to go ask GSF, good VW guy probably within a mile or three of most GSFs

keep away from kwik fit, they just rip off merchants, everytime my friend from work went in there for a service, they told her she need loads of work done to her car, even though there wasnt anything wrong with it.
And i know cos i eneded up doing the work for her. And all the stuff they said needed fixing was fine.

Kwik Fit's general policy seems to be to do the job, do it fast and by whatever means. It is really NOT the sort of place to take your treasured VW to.
Brake pads and a service etc are no big deal for the average owner really but if you're not up to it, find another T25 owner who is willing to help or do it for you or just ask the local beetle owners where they take their vehicles - the Aircooled brigade are generally very fussy who they let loose on their vehicles and if the garage they use knows bugs, they can certainly do a T25
It wasn't THAT long ago (and some 80/90 members are old enough to remember) when the T25 was virtually snubbed by Type 1 & 2 owners - it took a while for even Vanfest to accept the wedge completely but we are now thankfully part of the scene (bugs wave at me now which is real nice). The T25 has its roots in the Aircooled world and is generally regarded as the last of the best that VW built. You'll find local beetle owners helpful and friendly and they know all the right places to go!
As an aside, I adore my wedge but just guess whats lurking down the side of my garage...... a 69 bug! Love that too.

Will ask in GSF about local garage.
Had a small breakdown on Saturday in Mitcham and the Brittania guy was highly recommending VW Airfix in Carshalton.
Have seen mentioned elsewhere so will give a go.
Anyone with Ballpark idea on what it should cost?

Yep, highly recommended. Know several people who have used and always happy, knowledgable and loves his T25's (even drives one).
There is services and services. Ring him and speak to him, or better, go see him!
