whining gear box

i bought some molyslip - where do i put it?

Also how do i check the gearbox has enough fluid and whats the best one to top it up with?

Moly - why?
Fluid = gear oil unless its an auto then its called auto-fluid.

Drain and refill with correct oil - inspect drain-plug for fir-tree of metal particles, size and type; if box giving trouble then sieve oil through gauze of some kind as it comes out.
Vehicle type and age and No. of gears in box would help :wink:

and make sure you can undo the filler nut.before undoing the drain plug....

because molyslip stops gear whining!

Ok - how do i actually check if it needs more fluid? Or shall i just drain it all and fill up again...any tips?

its a caravelle, it used to have a diesel box but its been changed to a 4 speed petrol; i dont know what model it came from..

If you don't know the history, always a good idea!

Tips, look here on Syncro... From bottom of first page onwards

Moly, please let us know if it really does in your case... can believe it could stop it developing in the first place, but if its already more of a howl or persistent 'hum-in-the-bum' than a slight whine, then have not known it make much difference. Pinion gear tolerances or pinion support bearing wear are often responsible.

Anyway, see how much oil comes out, whats on magnetic drain plug and sieve it just for curiosity.

ok i checked the gearbox and its wet with oil on the bottom part. Does this mean its leaking?

I need to borrow the tool to open up the filler cap, is it worth me filling up if it's just going to leak out again?

If its whining its prob too late to prevent more wear so should get it refreshed asap.. I doubt Molyslip will do anything for it, it cant "repair" worn bearings..

Topping up with more oil.. your choice..
Dont and the box will blow/explode/seize, normally at the most inconvenient time and place..

Or top it up and get it to wherever for it to be removed..

They put oil in gearboxes for a reason!!!

its only just been put in! I cant need a new one already... :(

it only really whines in 2nd gear, others are fine...

If its only just been put in, where from? second hand unknown?
If its leaking bad, then maybe you should return to whoever fit it and complain.. a slight weep, ie so dirt sticks could be deemed acceptable.. but if its wet then not.. they shouldnt leak oil really..

Make sure the oil level is correct.. low/no oil will destroy it...

If that oil smells sweet but acrid, bit like some cat pee that lingers, then yes.

Let's do this properly shall we...

As I sais the 2 places it usally leaks are the drive flange seals or the input shaft bearing (and onto clutch or out through the bellhousing/engine face joint, or any other hols low-down in bellhousing.#

Are the drive flanges and below that area greasy/oily?
Is there oil firther aft, around and behind where the bellhousing and engine mate up?

What do you estimate the oil level in inches below the oil filler/level hole (use a piece of wire and repeat a few times till you're failry you know roughly where the level is.)

Now let's take it from there...

ok

it didnt have much oil in it! No wonder it was whining...I asumed the guy who fitted it would have put some in (wallhouse autos kent) but he didnt grrr

Anyway its filled up now + the molyslip and it's quieter altough it still slighty whines in second gear...hopefully i havnt done too much damage.

OK, you've done all you can really, good luck with it, hopefully it will settle down - maybe read the Wiki on cold weather and gearchanging...

Keep an eye on it for leaks and weeps, though one large enough to affect the levels seriously should be fairly self-evident.

ok my old van had the horrible hard 2nd gear...but the new van goes easy into all gears, its just the noise thats been bugging me...
