Rust Bucket

Post by Rufus »

Thinking of buying a T25. It has loads of rust on the body in the usual places but the underneath seems sound. It's a D reg so we expect a bit of rust.

The Diesel enginge Humms nicely.

Any suggestions on whther we should walk away or whether its worth an offer to do up and make the Van the Scooby machine our kids have always wanted.

If it's a buy vote on a suggestions on a reasonable price.

Don't buy the first piece of shyte you find there are loads about, it is simply a matter of searching for them.

but the underneath seems sound

They mostly are... or seem to be

Take Fritz' advice, lots of rust for £2500 is not what you want, the underneath might even be easier to sort than lots of rust in the bodywork.

General rule of thumb is usually get the most rust free/solid on e you can find/afford. Its easier and cheaper to replace mechanicals than to have to due vast amounts of structural work.

Thanks for your advice. The van we are looking at is not as bad as the one Fritz showed us, so maybe it is worth the 2 balloons and a goldfish !

We will keep looking but there does not seem to be much around at the moment, does it get better in the autumn ?

Thanks again

Stupid computer was not working last night...it knows I hate it. In answer to Owletts first question. The van is a 1.6 turbo diesel with 150,000 on the clock. The inerior seems very good, it is a Bilbo conversion if that means anything to any body. It has three rear seatbelts - big bonus as we have three children. Electric hook up and porta loo. The bellows is in good condition.

We were going to look at the van again with a mechanic friens on Sunday and we were hoping to go to Southsea commen first as there is a van show (buggin ?) on.

While I think about it most bellows seem to sleep 2 but I have seen pictures in magazines that seem to sleep 3 !!! Any idea where to get one ?

Thanks again

The lifting roof you speak of is a spacemaker by viking seen on late T2 & early (80-83)--T25s not many about now & most pretty rough--as for the rustif its round the window rubbers or seams check carefully as it could have gone right thru--also--150K miles on engine? has it been replaced-or the original?----£2500 seems a lot--Bilbos is a well known VW camper builder tho--

Hi

Thanks for the advice about Rust round the seals, the engine is the original. OUr budget is between £2500 and £3000, mainly because thats the range of the 6 vans we have seen so far. We would go a bit higher for the right van but we are loathe to spend too musch at the moment in case we don't like/use the camper. We would like a van with 5seatbelts so we could use it for the next month or so and then work on the rest of the van over the winter.

We did go to Buggin at Southsea today, there were loads of vans there and we spent most of our time walking around saying "I want that one"

We spent about 6 months looking for our camper. I know how frustrating it is going to a show without a camper! We got a bargain at £2550 for ours with hardly any rust and 111k on the clock. I was searching the web every day, and found ours on autotrader. Bargains are there to be had, and I'm glad now that we didn't just buy a rust bucket out of sheer desperation. Whatever you buy, I'm sure you'll love it and use it, and the kids will think it's the best thing ever.

HI Rufus,

my Aircooled is the scooby machine my kids didn't know they wanted....it was a surprise for them!!

The younger ones loved it... :D :D .it wasn't allowed anywhere near the school gates on Rosie's first day at secondary school... :( :( .you get followed....shouted at....police take your picture with the mobile phone... ..kids want to sit in it... :D ..it gets photographed everywhere.. :D ..It will not get lost in a car park!!! :D :D

However, Rosie's school mates think its cool... .my colleagues at work rate it as the best in the car park (and there are some pretty flash motors here)...and I wouldn't be without her! Road rage.....most die laughing!!!

All the best for the search, and have fun painting it!!

If you want better pictures than the little one here, let me know!

Regards

Emma

xx

ps - that picture is a little old....she now carries the spare wheel on the front. I am also planning cosmetic alterations to the front to provide the smooth front of the mystery machine. Wheels also need the orange flower, but have to get the paint mixed for the correct colour!
