Voltage reg/ stabaliser

Post by TOMMY THE CAT »

Well just come back from a top week (if a little grey) in Cornwall/Devon/ Somerset and I have this intemitent prob.
Basically my fuel gauge /temp disappears off only to return when I turn the engine off and restart. Now thought voltage reg, hunted everywhere only to get one from vw now it looks diff to the one I've got and when I tried it got nowt not even indicators.
So put in old one evrything worked again (as I said its intermittent) and went on hols........40 m down road goes again turn the engine off nowt, also no display for indicat' only high beam shows on dash!!! Not good at the start of your hol no temp gauge/ fuel gauge
ANYWAY....... On me hols not too chuffed and the damn thing has come back on and been fine ever since!!!!!!!
So do I pressume the vw volt reg needs to go back as its the wrong one and mines playing up or crack in circuit board or what!!!???!
Getting a bit on me pip now ta D

t a for that I will have a look see> Its annoying as the gauges are ok now but I know they will go again just dont know what to change. I was under the impression that if it was the v reg fault I wouldn;'t get anything and all this does is regulate the v?

The voltage regulator on the alternator controls the output from the alternator...... The usual fault is the brushes wear and make poor contact with the moving copper rings on the shaft. If this happens the battery wont charge propperly and the instruments read oddly.
Put a Voltmeter on the battery with engine running you should be getting about 14V if not Vreg needs repacing.

Try thumping the dash when the 'fault' happens.
