1.6TD issues!

Post by Bathsheba »

Hi

I've had ongoing problems with my 1.6TD over the last couple of months. Basically, it runs fine for a few days, then won't start - turns over, but just won't fire up. Then, just when you've given up all hope, having left it for a day or two (on the mechanic's forecourt) it starts again, but apparently runs for about ten minutes and then plays up. Appears to be a fuel problem, but there's no leak that we can find (except the full tank thing, mentioned in another thread).
There was a possible incident a few weeks ago of the wrong fuel in the tank - my receipt confirms that I used the diesel pump, but the breakdown bloke thought it was possibly petrol. Tank drained, and we still weren't sure, because I filled it up when it was already about a third full, so it will have been a mix. Tesco (ha!) have dug their heels in and said it's not possible.

It appears to be a head-scratching situation. Anyway, they're taking the injectors out today to clean them, and we're hoping it's not the whole pump needing an overhaul.

Does anyone have any other ideas? I'd be very grateful (especially for advice in simple English - you'll have gathered I'm not a techie!) I'm worried I'm running out of lives with the breakdown company!

when was the fuel filter last changed? there should be a knurled nut under the fuel filter undo it and drain it into a jam jar should have about half jar leave it to stand and see how much water is in the fuel if there is a lot in relation to fuel that could well be your problem if all is well here check the fuel line from the tank to filter is clear

Thanks Ivor - I was beginning to think there was no-one out there!
Fuel filter was changed pretty recently, I think. However, the latest update is that two of the injectors are shot, so they're being replaced and I hope will be back tomorrow. Cutting it a bit fine, as I have THE festival of my year to go to on Tuesday! (all fingers and toes are crossed)

I had a similar problem with mine, basically a small piece of fuel hose underneath the van, about 4 inches long had de-laminated inside and was intermittently blocking the fuel. It would work fine for a few days and then come to a stop, then left for ten minutes or so would start and run for hundred yards or so then stop. Then would run fine for a few days, then repeat until it eventually wouldn't go at all.
Might be worth a check?
