Strange fuel pump behaviour

Post by irish.david »

After a titanic struggle i'm finally ready to test run the 2.1DJ i've installed in my van. However, whenever i turn on the ignition the fuel pump runs for about a second, stops for a second, runs for a second and then stops. When it's running it pumps fuel so the pump appears ok and there's a good solid click from the relay. I tried disconnecting the starter solenoid and checking the fuel pump with the key in the "start van" position but it still doesn't run.

Can anyone tell me is this normal? If not has anyone been in a similar situation?

Cheers

Dave

Fuel Problems

Post by Fritz »

David,,,,,,,,,On the 2.1 injection models the fuel pump runs for a couple of seconds to purge the system for the inital start every time the ignition is turned on.
Then once in the start position (engine running) the pump will run constantly with excess fuel being returned to the tank.

By the sound of what you are telling us I'd be having the fuel regulator checked as this is the item which if faulty will give you erratic fuel pressure, also the fuel pump will give similar results if it is on its way out.

So Have fuel pressure checked to see what is going on.

Cheers for the reply Fritz. I actually managed to get the lump running earlier today.

Problem i was having was that, having disconnected the return fuel line to the tank from the regulator, i wasn't getting any fuel coming out when i switched the ignition on. Initially i thought it was because the fuel pump wasn't running for long enough to pressurise the system but after bridging some contacts on the wiring harness to make the fuel pump run constantly i still wasn't getting any fuel out of the regulator.

4 hours later and having dismantled the whole fuel system (including checking the opening pressure of the regulator using a tyre air compressor) I decided to stick 5 litres of fuel in the tank. After that everything worked pretty much as i was supposed to.

Wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry.........

I was gunna say 'Is there any fuel in it' but I didn't want to sound patronising,,,,

Don't forget you'll be needing at least 10 beers tonight to take away the taste of the petrol from your lungs,,,,,,PS, have one for me.
