electrics on dash

ok folks my little red LED flashes constantly i have changed the water level sensor around 3 months ago stopped for a while then back on its defo an earthing problem as when i switch on my lights it goes of i have tried the barrel connector in the engine bay but nothing changing so if it is a bad earth how do i go about rectifying it?? stupid complete novice waiting for reply cheers ROB!!

Have a look behind the dash at the earths and the ribbon cable .

its not definitely an earthing problem. I don't have the circuit diagram here to check how it works but that light flashes when it doesn't have 12v on it. You could have a wiring fault that is allowing your lights to supply the 12v. Still worth checking your earths though.

ok remember novice here but doesnt it need a supply of 12v to work? or is thet a silly question
tony tech; what colour is the earth wire that comes out the back of the clocks?? could possibley follow that for breaks etc......

not a silly question but I don't have the diagram here for me to give an accurate answer (book is down in the van and I've only just come up so don't want to go down again).

I do know that if the wire on the sensor breaks then the light flashes. In fact the switch on the sensor is a "normally closed" one which mean that the current flows in its rest position. I am guessing that there are 2 circuits. The one that checks for a continuous circuit from the water bottle and one that flashes the light, with some clever electronics sticking the 2 together. Its not just a simple 12v out, through a device and back to earth.

forgot to add, most 0v wires on these are brown although many have been modified, often with black as the 0v wire. A common "earth fault" is the rosette of several wires behind the glove box gets detached and forgotten about (guess how I found out). This leads to very odd behaviour as an earth path is found via other objects. Make sure the rosette is screwed to the bodywork.
