1600 CT Aircooled vacuum lines question

Post by shaky »

Hi all,

A 1600 CT question: I'm replacing the vacuum lines around the carbs, distributor, manifold and airbox and looking at my airbox I see two connectors for the vacuum lines.

Image

However Mr Haynes shows four! Two being labelled as Temperature regulator and two as Temperature switch. I reckon the airbox in my bus is original so it has survived with just these two. Are there any CT experts left who could guide me in what to connect to which?

I hope that I'm making sense.

Best,

Paul.

Hello,
So you have an early 80-81 T3 CT, the Haynes shows the later 81-82 version, with plastic vent covers at the rear air intakes

Here is the earlier, as fitted to Golfs with carburettor of 1980:

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the diagram... Ill take a proper look tomorrow, I can follow most of it but can't work out where the feed from the inlet manifold comes in yet. Also I have two three way connectors but no four way as in the diagram....

I'll have a play tommorrow... No doubt I will be back with more questions,

Thanks,

Paul.

Hi Sarran,

I've followed your diagram. The lines from the vac advance on the distributor are easy and follow as they are the same as the Haynes manual.

There are two differences not shown on your diagram so I wanted to check with you that I've made the correct assumptions.

1) The Vacuum line from the Manifold: In the Haynes diagram it connects to the first tube on the airbox. As there is now already a line into this from the carb/distributor I've linked it into this line.

2) The "Temperature control valve" on the carb: (This is a strange piece of witchcraft that I don't know what it does and is not present on a Pict 34 -3 carb). The Haynes manual shows it linked to the second set of connectors that go to the temperature valve on the air intake so I've plumbed it into there.

The attached picture still needs the pipework tidying up, (the fuel lines are a bit odd becasue I have the tank out and am using a separate rig at the moment). I've added the air filter and cowl and had the engine running. Tickover is a bit lumpy but it is the first time that I've had it running for three years so there is still a lot of fine tuning to be done. Hopefully I've plumbed in the vacuum lines properly. What do you think?

Thanks,

Paul.

p.s Diagrammatically this is what I have done!
