Fuel gauge

Post by southernscouse »

Hi having a problem with the fuel gauge reading empty everything else works ok just the fuel gauge
Van has been fitted with the slaughterhouse custom wire kit which has been problematic over the years
Is there a easy way to see if it’s the gauge or the sender unit don’t want to be under the van if I can help it
Thanks Tom

Tom
you don't say what year van you have so I can't tell you pin numbers
But basically you need to measure the resistance to earth of the pin in the 14 pin connector that is the gauge signal from the tank - this reading varies depending on fuel level - full is around 35 ohm and empty is around 270 ohm - if you have open circuit then either there is a wiring fault between the sender and the gauge, or more likely the earth contact on the chassis above the tank has corroded so the sender has no earth. If you have a resistance between 35 and 270 then the problem is the dash. You can check the dash by putting a wire from earth to the corresponding pin in the module and turning on the ignition, with zero resistance and voltage the gauge should go to full full

Has the fuel gauge always read empty since you fitted the SHC dash kit.

Do you have a rec counter ?

You can test the gauge by testing the feed and earth resistance to it
