Gear Linkages .. Again .. Sorry

Afternoon all

I've spent an age reading and trying to get my van to select gears other than 2345 (dog leg)

VW T25 1.9 petrol - engine and box from a G registered and mine is a B reg.

Took all rods etc from the old van before scrapping it as was
as rotten as a pear.

i can get it to go over and down to 1st but just not quite enough to engage, and across to reverse not even anywhere near up to engage.



Any help would be appreciated.

okay
the selector ball on the gearbox is stuffed, the rust on the metal part has split the collar of the ball and the ball has pushed up the steel shaft so the shaft is interfering with the bottom of the cup

you can either buy a whole new ball assembly 251 711 221 F, but usually cheaper and better is to buy from Brickwerks the genuine nylon ball on its own, 251 711 131 C
Remove the old ball remains and clean up the steel part, paint it if you want, and push the new ball on up to the obvious stop, the metal part will be recessed in the bottom of the ball by a couple or 3 mm.

Also the boot 251 711 167 E is split so get a new one, genuine one is much better, again Brickie sells them

Clean out the socket, put a small scoop of clean lube in, mate the cup and the ball, pull the skirt down over the cup like you'd like your teenage daughter to be dressed when she leaves the house

I take it you have the front box with the guides that goes under the gearstick and the guides are in good condition ?

The guide for setting it up is in the wiki or you can search for the multiple times I have posted it, Google search can be more useful than the sites search function

Silly question perhaps, but presumably you have the housing ‘box’ that sits around the bottom of the gearstick which contains all the gear shift guides … ?

If you haven’t done it already, get yourself a copy of the Bentley manual - you can find it on the vwt25 website.

Section 34 contains all the info you’ll need to correctly set up your gear shifter.

i have the front housing with the stops etc and they look slightly worn but not excessive, i removed it for the photo's.

again a big thanks and ill update you when ive replaced the things mentioned, ordering tonight.

Couple of big sets of grips and a lot of patience... And an assistant who doesn't get bored and wander off after ten minutes.

It's a fiddly tedious job but satisfying when it's right! I wouldn't have had idea one how to do it without this forum.

I had printed the wiki and the other step by step guide and read them over, in my simple head it was the front end of the gear linkage,

I just didnt notice the corroded and fubar'd bits.

Once you’ve got the gear selector and gearbox ‘ends’ cleaned up and working freely then everything comes down to getting that connector/ joint in the middle of the van set up correctly.
