Holdsworth 1.9 petrol 1984 (screech on starting)

Post by gutmeg »

Hi there, just wanted to say following my recent post regarding removal of faulty ignition switch/barrel.
Following  the replies I followed the wiki link info kindly sent by Rob, and advice from others, and all worked well., so thank you all.
Another query please, this has been happening a  little while.
Only on starting when left for a bit, the engine turns and fires, and develops a loud screech,
which sounds like fanbelt slip, but I have adjusted and still happens.
This lasts for about 10 seconds and stops, and does not come back at all when driving.
Any ideas from anybody on here, and does this need attention i.e. could this be a sign for something else terrible?
Many Thanks for any advice, /logic.
Many thanks to all, and keep these beasts rolling!
Regards Lloyd

It will be a fanbelt slipping. If you can id the pulley take it off and give it a clean with emery if any rust spots.

How old are the belts.

They are a PITA.

My JX does this and i just live with it.

Hi Aidan thanks for the translation.  I have  looked at page 149 under Mechanical, and under "screaming alternator belt", it suggests the remedy is very different, and consequential if left.
Have a look. I will check the water pump for wear.

Take the belts off. Turn them inside out and if they have cracks in them replace them.

A quck way to clean the pulleys is when they are spinning hold some emery in the groove. Take adequate safety precautions.

Make sure they run true.

And when replacing the belt do leave a little slack in it......too much tension and you run the risk of knackering the water pump. Now, that is a pita!
