Twin speed fan tripping (2 switches) 1982 Diesel 1.6

Post by Jonnyb416 »

Hi all,

Long time since posting on here. Hoping someone can help please.

For a while I’ve been concerned that my rad fan hasn’t been working, however, it’s never overheated and the vans been on the road for 12 years, 9 years since I had a new radiator core fitted (old style big rad with the 2 switches at the top)

Recent hot weather has made me look into this in more detail as the gauge has risen a bit more recently and the fan hasn’t seemed to come on.

So we’ve installed a chicken switch to the high speed switch. All seemed fine when testing with the engine not running. But when the engine is on and I flick the switch it still trips. Sometimes immediately, others after maybe 5-8 seconds.

Tried moving the low speed wire to a different fuse (No 9 Flasher Unit) this seemed to do the job, but tonight when testing during a drive out, it’s tripped again.

On Saturday we’ll fit another chicken switch to the low speed this time to see if that helps.

The fuse is getting quite hot during testing.

Changed the relay just in case.

Does anyone have any other ideas please?

Thanks, Jon.

Fan near seizing up so too much current draw making it trip, perhaps?

The chicken switch? No, direct through the bulk head.

Well, the chicken switch taps into the 2 wires that go to the high temp switch. Then through the dash onto a switch.
