Odometer intermittently working.

My odometer stopped working a couple of weeks ago - speedo was fine so it's not the cable at fault.
I looked it up, took the speedo unit apart and subsequently bought a Brickwerks odometer shaft repair bracket. This was fitted and the unit tested - all seemd ok.
It worked for about 20 miles then stopeed again - re-setting the trip meter made it move again but not for long.

I took the unit apart again, tweeked the bracket and tested - all looked and seemed fine.
Back in the van it worked for about 12 miles then stopped again.
Again, re-setting the trip made it work for a few miles.

I'm guessing that there is something amiss in the actual gearing of the odometer or something getting stuck.
Can the unit be taken apart further, without ending up with a pile of bits that I can't put back together?

Does anyone have any ideas.

Make sure the drive shaft is seated properly lengthwise - if I recall correctly, gently but firmly pushing the shaft into place from the drive end seemed to move it slightly into a better position where it seems to work more reliably now.

Yes, when I first dismantled the speedo it was obvious that the shaft had moved so that the drive cog and worm gear were not engaging properly. I pushed it back and the repair bracket is there to stop it moving away again.
The cog and worm drive look pefectly aligned now.

When it first happened, the numbers on the odometer 'dropped' so that they were only half visible through the holes on the speedo face.
As soon as the shaft was pushed back, they returned to normal and have remained inline as they should be.
