Anyone upgraded their camper storage hatch gas struts?

Anyone upgraded their camper storage hatch gas struts?

Post by joefaison »

Hi everyone,
I'm slowly freshening up my camper and one of the jobs on my list is replacing a pair of tired gas struts on one of the storage hatches. They're still working, but they're definitely not holding the weight like they used to.
On another vehicle I own, I fitted a Hatchlift Products gas lift kit for a storage compartment and it's been working well, so it's made me wonder whether anyone here has tried something similar on a VW camper or whether there's another brand that's become the go-to choice.
My biggest concern is getting the force rating right rather than just buying the strongest struts available. Has anyone found a setup that's worked particularly well for heavier hatch lids?
I'd be interested to hear what you've used and how it's held up after a few years.
please answer genuinly!!!!

for the tailgate standard version is 251 829 331 A, originally rated as 600Nm but for a bike rack fitted tailgate we normally use the 800Nm variant, Brickwerks sell them both, little price difference. I have the 800s on my van, in case I put a rack on, but mostly cos the current ones will not be as good quality as the genuine ones made in 1980s ime so likely won't fail as quick as a low quality 600 one, make sure your rubber washers (N 902 282 01 - 2 each side) are ok they help reduce rattles

I'm intrigued as to what camper the OP is referring to.
Most t3s only have gas struts on the tailgate. Storage hatches? maybe on a coachbuilt?
What vehicle exactly are you referring to please?
