I’ve dropped the fuel tank today as was running badly symptoms of poor fuelling so having done a new fuel filter. Fuel pump is pretty new, wiring to fuel pump renewed with fuel pump, I made the decision to clean out the years of crud and rust flakes etc from the fuel tank. That done and the tank drying in the sun it’s a good time to get under there and look for any other issues…
So- I’m going to look around the cavity where it fits and clean up the obvious.
If anyone has anything else specific to look out for or to address while the opportunity exists I’m open to suggestions!
If you don’t mind me asking, where did you get your new fuel filter from, I ordered one for a 1.9 FI from heritage parts and it turned up, well it won’t fit as it’s about ten times the size as my existing one.
renew the breather flexis while you are there, check the grommets, filler neck hose etc.. clean the earth connection on the body for the level sender and clean the electrical connections, put some Vaseline on the earth when you reconnect
@Lilythefrench
if your engine is the DH then the fuel filter was made obsolete by VW many years ago
you might need something like this ? ebay link
I can't be sure cos I can't get the VW part number for the DH engine, the GW uses the big one same as the 2.1 which is probably what you got from Heritage

Ah - you’ve got a filter for fuel injection engines. You need the one for carburettor petrol engines for your 1.9 I suspect. Brickwerks are my goto and indeed I believe Simon Baxter of Brickwerks was also partly responsible for founding this forum!

Thanks Aidan- I’ve just done the breather flexis. They were pretty crumbly! I’ve got replacement grommets arriving from Brickwerks tomorrow too as made sense to renew them while it’s in bits. I did wonder what that earth was for. Good to know. I’ll give it a good clean up and reseat it with some vas.

So I take it mine is the 1.9 carb, not the fuel injection model as I was told.
Sorry I’m really not mechanically talented haha
That bit in the middle under the black plastic ‘pancake’ is your carburettor. Probably a pierberg 2e3. They are great when set up properly. I had my old one done on a rolling road by an old school VW tuner in Plymouth. It was a joy to drive.
You’re in good hands with everyone here with any questions and no judgement.
I got my first T25 about 15 years ago and had minimal knowledge. I’ve learned so much from lots of helpful people and these days take on all sorts of jobs I wouldn’t have dreamed of before.
