Hi all
I'm upgrading my alternator from a 65amp to the 90 amp and just after some info about wiring layout.
Ive ran a brand new cable from the battery + direct to the back and want to know if im right in thinking the B+ post is for the battery cable and D+ is for the small blue wire.
Im planning on leaving the existing alternator wire feed for that distribution point in the black box.
Also has anyone strengthened the alternator bracket themselves as this 90amp is much heavier and ive seen horror stories of cracking the blocks.
Alternator upgrade

Re: Alternator upgrade
yes B+ connects to the starter motor on a WBX, D+ is the signal wire to the dash
There was a different support angled bracket with a toothed rail 025 903 251 used, together with special bolt 034 903 555 B, which is stronger and makes adjusting belt tension easier
GoWesty have made a heavy duty bracket for the alternator, I don't know if anyone in the UK stocks it

Re: Alternator upgrade
Thankyou for the reply. So should I leave the existing starter cable in but also run that new cable ive fed in or just run that new cable and remove the old between the alternator and distribution point. Trying to help future proof as I'm going to be running an audio system requiring a bit of power.

Re: Alternator upgrade
on the wbx the cable runs from the battery to the starter where it connects to the alternator cable on the stud on the solenoid
the small alternator loom also has the feed to the black box which is used to supply 12V to the engine - it's a simple, but robust, easily diagnosed, current capable, system
that wasn't designed for hi power stereos
if you need power for thumping great stereo probably better to use a second battery (as per the leisure systems in campers) with a VSR set up to provide power to that to charge the leisure battery. Whatever you do you want to protect the starter battery from losing voltage and not lose power to the engine systems as they are more important than sound
wiring diagram is available online

Re: Alternator upgrade
Thanks for the reply. I didn't know it's actually the starter cable which is the alternator cable aswell. I followed the larger cable from the battery to the starter but then followed a smaller cable from the battery going over the top of the fuel tank along the passenger side chassis rail to the black box and then to thealternator. I assumed that was what carried the alternator current and not jumping through the starter. In which case then I can just upgrade the starter cable and then upgrade the jumper from the starter to the alternator without messing with anything else.
