with an old stock engine I wouldn't be changing tyre sizes, but if you fit a more modern more powerful one then you have room for manoeuvre; the original tyre size and gearing was the best available compromise, the 0.82 fifth gear a little conservative but that was how VW could get the old engines through the real world emissions testing that came in 1985, prior to that they could run the engines dirtier at higher revs and pull a taller 5th gear

I have a stock height holdsworth, 1.9dg, 5 speed, running 14" maxxis AT atm. Thinking of fitting a set of merc wheels i aquired recently, will need 10mm spacers im told, thinking of AT tyres again. Any recommendations, 195 75 15, or could I go bigger????

You could fit bigger but the DG won't have the balls to push anything much taller along, especially with the weight in a camper.
