T25 running rich, lumpy between 1st and 2nd gears

Post by Luta »

Hi new t25 owner here, I have just purchased a 1990 t25 1.9dg, it’s starts and runs but is running rich and stalling until warmed up. Also a bit rough from 1st to 2nd gear, all other gear changes are fine including dropping from 3rd to 2nd. Any ideas what I can be checking to find the issue?

Thanks

A bit rich could be air filter, plugs, timing, carb tuning, air leaks

If 4 speed the shift from 1st to 2nd is usually a bit poor when cold but after a mile or so ceases to be a problem, but wear to synchroniser and rings from previous drivers rushing that change doesn't go away - can also be exacerbated by worn pinion bearing. I'd recommend a gearbox oil change or at least drain it as that is the only way to see the drainplug magnet if new to you (changing all the fluids is recommended unless you have documented knowledge of service history) which will give an overall window into the condition of the gearbox. If the magnet has fine metal build up so it's the thickness of little finger over whole length then that's worn bearings. If it's a punk haircut and no fines then that's generally okay
