GEAR LEVER KIT ON 5 SPEED

Post by further »

Have been able replace most of the parts from brickwerks at the gear lever and in the box underneath.
Not able to replace the spring and ball bearing as the piston wont slide right out on the 5 speed section
it gets stuck on the groove each side. Any ideas, l havent found any info online. Thanks in advance.

it's pretty straight forward, you remove the boot or the remains of it, pop off the c clip that is the stop for the spring and the guide pin is free to move, remove the cap from the other end and remove the securing circlip then the guide pin will push out the open end of the tube releasing the ball and spring located in the spring tube

reassembly you pop the spring back in and the ball into their tube via the hole in the bottom and push them up with a suitable punch/drift so you can push the guide pin with its new rubber ring on in displacing your drift as it reaches the ball, a bit of lithium grease on everything as you reassemble and cap and boot keeps the lube where it needs to be

The guide pin won't slide out it stops on the groove near the end of the guide pin, do l help it on it's
way with some gentle taps, that the problem don't want to damage anything.

so I have just stripped a gearstick to check, yes the pin will be prevented from just coming out by the detent ball so you have to persuade it to, doesn't take much force, I just wrapped it all in a rag and supported the stick body on the jaws of an open vice and then impacted the pin with a blunt instrument, you could use a punch or even a long bolt, no need for a hammer I just used the weight of my arm holding the punch to drive it out the open end of the tube and the ball was caught along with the pin in the rag, spring stayed in the stick and was then fished out, once free, with a small screwdriver, through the access hole in the bottom.

and warm the new damping ring in hot/boiled water for a minute to make it flexible enough to get over the end of the pin, it's quite a stretch from memory
