Yes Id think so. I used some generic sticky back dense foam (3M) , just cut it to the right sizes. It's all pretty clear once you have it out and open Image

No. I managed to do all the work with it inside vehicle.

Thanks guys. I tried to take it out and stripped one stuck screw all the way behind the brake booster, so If I fail to drill that out I might indeed have to try it with the housing still inside of the van.

With the dashboard out I can now see that half of the heater box is filled with this stuff:

Either a remnant of some insulation or an animals' nest I would imagine. Strengthens my feeling that this whole endeavor is worth it 😅

 LOOKS LIKE A PIECE OF  THE INSULATION PADS THAT ARE BEHIND THE HEADLINER.
