Hi all,
So..van is a early 1.6 air-cooled fella. Problem I'm having is he having removed the engine for work, upon re installation, I can't find the wire that goes to the alternator for the battery light.
Has a blue wire coming from the alternator but has been cut?
Any help would be appreciated
Garry

Re: Alternator wire ?
Blue wire should go via a single terminal connector close to the alternator and from there off to a multiplug in the relay box in the engine compartment. According to the diagram in the green Haynes Aircooled book that is a 4 way multiplug connecting to the loom going up front to the dash and the wire stays blue all the way. Hope that helps - can't take piccies of mine for you as mine is a diesel and on this the connector near the alternator is up close to the battery positive lead which you won't have in the engine bay.

Re: Alternator wire ?
Just read your reply again, I have no relay box in the engine compartment, just a few wires that go to the distributor and the light clusters.

Re: Alternator wire ?
Sorry - you're right - those early air cooled engines don't have that box on the left hand back wall looking into the engine bay. The later ones that is where many of the electrical connections between the looms live. Been a long while since I last had a good look inside one. Tried looking at photos on web and saw one where the blue wire seems to disappear up into the the right hand side pillar. No idea though from photos what is original or not so may be best waiting for someone more familiar with air cooled engines to chime in. If you can though I would have a good look at all the wires anywhere around the engine bay to see if any are solid blue.

Re: Alternator wire ?
So, randomly found it, I was fitting new springs and shocks, when I saw a thin blue wire (after I cleaned off years of crap)
Thought that's gotta be it, connected it up and battery light.
hurrah
If anyone if wondering it's in with the drivers rear light harnesses
