Clunking knocking sounds

Post by S3w3llm »

Hey knowledgeable people. I have replaced all the front suspension bushes on my 1982 t25. Everything is tight to required spec yet when I’m driving I hear knocking and clunking sounds. There is a bit of play in the steering rack. Any suggestions on how to remedy this?

Cheers

Michael.

I know this is a daft question but are you sure the noise is coming from the front?

Pretty sure yeah. I thought it might be the radius rods but they are both tight. It’s as the van is going over bumps and on rougher roads.

Did you replace the wishbone bushes and assuming a 2WD did you tack weld them back one the wishbone? I mean I suppose your steering bevel box / rack could have play or a tie rod could be worn

Did you take brake calipers off?
Could be as simple as caliper bolts not tight enough.
Had this on a friends bus. He could'nt find the source of the knocking. I drove it and lightly applied pressure to brake pedal with left foot and knocking stopped. Similar thing happened on a friends Bay Window. Same issue. Extra torque on caliper bolts and no more knocking.
Just a thought!

That’s a good thought. I will check those too next time I’m home. Many thanks.

Top wishbone long bolt and nut , I had some clonks from that after a job there. I had to pinch that up to take out any slack.
