Hi all,
Been thinking about getting a couple of solar chargers to maintain leisure and main batteries. Has anyone got any recommendations on the ones they use? What wattage is best. Is there one that can change then maintain? What are the pitfalls? Should I even be considering these?
Go gently and please don’t roast me
Cheers!
I use a semi flexible supposedly 20W one off Ebay about 1 1/2 sheets of A4 size and a £10 mttp controller to maintain, my van is parked windscreen facing SSW so it gets lots of sunlight, even in winter
I use a couple of suction hooks on the inside of the windscreen on the passenger side to hold it in place, easy to unhook when vehicle is driven, the hooks are small enough and basically clear so can be left in place when driving
cheaper now than when I bought it a few years ago as separate items Ebay link
I also use similar sized panels via home made float charging modules (one for each battery) set at 13.7 volts. These keep 5 batteries fully charged over winter, and my batteries last much longer. My truck battery is 11 years old and still starting a diesel (just!)
I can give details of the float charging modules if you want. The benefit of these is that they are very close to the battery, so sense its voltage very accurately.
Cheers for that Aidan. I thought I'd get myself one of them, but.... they don't post to Scottish islands . With Royal Mail it costs exactly the same We get this a lot (sigh).
I've messaged to tactfully explain and request they make an exception.
