JX 1.6 td Intercooler kit

Post by dcworm57 »

I’m considering upgrades for my JX , there doesn’t seem to be much you can do apart from engine swap. Anyway I’ve seen an intercooler kit from Mybusparts in Germany . It comes as pretty much complete kit to do the job , it’s not cheap at about 2k , looks like it’s a bolt on set up. Has anyone used this or know anything about it ,are ther kits available like this in the uk , are the benefits worth the cost and hassle etc , what are the knock on affects , does anything else need to be upgraded to cope with the extra power .Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated. Cheers

As I can see only the brackets are custom, all other parts are standard off the shelf or universal ones.

Manifold is form 1Z, they took a tricky pic of the intercooler, I think it is form a Crafter/T6

That’s interesting, so you think that parts are available off the shelf if you can be bothered searching..

Yes, you can build your "kit" if you have time/money for this kind of job. it helps if you deal with car parts daily.

There are universal kits also available that you can adapt to your van.

An IC alone won't provide much extra power, and for the price on the ad would be a completely disproportionate purchase IMO. The 1.6TD can be tuned for more power but that needs more fuel and air, eg. injector, pump and turbo adjustments, with IC added to keep intake and exhaust temps in an acceptable range. VW made the 1.6 SB engine with an IC which was specced at 80hp (?), I ran one of those for a while in my pickup.

It's such an old and obscure engine now that would all be a rather niche activity, so resources would be limited, but there are places such as the IDI section on vwdiesel.net.

As for upgrades to cope with 'extra power', no I wouldn't be concerned about that so long as your stock brakes are working OK. My Syncro kombi tin-top camper stops just fine on stock brakes and thats got a subaru 2.5.

Where can I find the information about pump and turbo adjustments ?
thanks

You also won't be able to use the JX air box with a TDI inlet manifold.
Here's one I did for a 1Z conversion but it could work for th JX.

I'd suggest spending a bit of time doing some reading and research, the forum already mentioned should be a good starting point. Be prepared to dig a bit deep as a lot of info will be buried decades into internet history, so your 'google-fu' will come into play. Getting familiar with relevant tech German may help, and using your browser translator on German language sites can be helpful. Don't just rely on being fed all the answers by modern social platforms.

Of course your JX should be fully serviced and proven 'healthy' before commencing tuning, see here:

Oettinger did a kit back in the day that supposedly produced 90hp that used their own charge cooler, GTD injectors, bleed valve and a modified injection pump.
The mods were pretty simple and fairly crude as the LDA isn't really adjustable on the T3 like a standard Turbo VE pump where you could use different boost pins, there was some grinding of levers, removal of a lever stop and the addition of a spacer to get some more travel out of the LDA.
Boost was around 1.05 bar.

I would say, if you are seriously considering this then please fit a boost gauge and an EGT gauge as insurance.

Depending on power produced I'd suspect your standard clutch will start to slip.

Have a read here.

This may be useful.
