Morning all,
Just a quick one on something that I imagine has been touched on multiple times but I can't seem to find anything that is either new enough for links to work or with a definitive answer.
Will be taking my newly acquired van and also first classic over and onto the continent in about 4 weeks, so have abit of time to do some Mechanical prep.
The van was previously owned by someone who kept on top of things but was also not exactly mechanically minded (his words not mine) (baring in mind I drove back from Ipswich to Staffordshire without missing a beat).
This brings me to now, I have recently stripped, Ultra sonic'd (nice new word) and rebuilt the carb and have that now running beautifully (was actually the auto choke killing her when ideling due to a loose nut for the spring), now looking to go full service with plugs, coolant flush etc etc (does anyone have suggestions on which oil to use for engine and gearbox? Is it worth using some ZDDP with the oil or is there a oil with a adequate qty? Van is on about 130,000 miles).
Once I return from said trip I will be Starting a self restoration on the full van to hopefully a nut and bolt level. (slowly may I add)
So I suppose my question is. What on top of a service would people suggest doing before taking the old girl out through the Dolomites and Alps for two weeks? And what are the suggestions for a service?
Thanks a million

Re: 1.9 DG 5 Speed Manual help
Too add to this, I also currently have a "aftermarket" air filter fitted without the standard airbox. Going back to standard is something I would like to do with a cotton element but currently can't find anything about what is needed other than the airbox (believe I need the round one not rectangle).
I was under the belief that there was some fancy jiggery pokery going on behind the tail light and not sure what might be missing after plumbing the air feed pipe in and refitting the vac line from carb to filter and filter to behind tail light.

Re: 1.9 DG 5 Speed Manual help
When we took our daily driver bus down to Austria for 20 days and 5-up, I gave it a full brake service and new wheel bearings because a failure was unthinkable. The only thing that went wrong was water ingress into the central locking during a massive storm, otherwise aok.
If its safety critical, do it and test it well before.
Manual transaxle oil should be 75W90. ZDDP is for engines with flat tappets and no catalyst.
