small mercies

Post by Jim San »

When it comes to sheared bolts, sometimes you just have to be grateful it's just bad and not terrible

As my clueless stripdown i sheared a bolt whilst removing the 4 x 13mm bolts from the engine mount.

Never puts a smile on your face does it!

When trying to remove the arm, it would only rotate slightly The 'good' news is - the bolt is seized in the ally arm not in the thread :)

Still scuppered though, can't get it off. I've given it a good firm thunk with a mallet and doused it with plus gas.

Keep smiling

Still don't know the issue with the motor, all looks pretty good in there, just worn.

Injectors have been assessed, electrically fine, but more a dribble than a Mist. They are being rebuilt

 Try some heat  :ok
worst case cut the bolt head of remove the other bolts then tap the alloy hanger working it of the cut bolt then remove the offending bolt.

All other bolts are out, the hanger is lose in that it swings left and right about an inch before fouling onthe block.
The head of the last bolt is sheared off flush with the ally hanger, the thread of the bolt is seized in the hanger.
I will put some heat on it, it's a PITA but not as bad as having to drill it out of the thread.

Did it  :ok

kept wiggling and prying and adding plus gas.  Eventually got bored of that so drilled down the middle of the bolt.
The weakened wall allowed the wiggle room to increase and it just became a matter of time.

Heat is always your friend when it comes to steel bolts stuck in aluminium. But you do have to get a lot of heat into a big piece like that really fast because it will lose heat almost as fast as you add it, so its a big propane lamp job not a little Mapgas torch.

Drilling out freehand is the brave option, too much risk of it running off and once you're off centre, there is no bringing it back!

I don't have a propane torch.
I should add a list of things I've needed to buy to get this far, a torch should have been one of them.

Face of the sheered bolt was pretty flat and smooth which made centre punching a bit easier. Very light tap at first to check mark is centred then bam - made a decent mark.
Checked progress whilst drilling knowing only the smallest of corrections was possible.
And used a lot of luck
