I guess I'm double sorted after today

Fixed 3 problems

Took the Caravelle to Acorn Auto Electrics at Grimethorpe in Barnsley, proper old school service, great guys, nothing was too much trouble to explain and fix

My DENSO alternator was recommended to me by the guy I got the engine off but was too new, being ecu controlled and not as simple to wire in as I thought

I guess there's a way to wire it in to the ECU but not for me so I did the dash light and a Sense wire, dash light went out on start up but the battery was still only 12v and not the 13.5v or 14v it should have been, clutch worked fine too so no belt slippage

So my DENSO alternator passed a charge test on the bench there but wasn't charging the battery when on the van

They recommended i try an earlier alternator as same fitment dimensions with big red lead and dash light only similar to what we're all used to on our vans, no extra wires

Took it home, fitted it and all is well, charging happily at 14.1v, very pleased

Also reattached my battery cover as the pop rivets had pulled free on the hinge mount

I've also changed back to the original VW starter and been running the engine up to temp and switching it off and restarting as this has been a persistent problem, works great so guessing there was some kind of voltage drop brought about by the DENSO alternator

I phoned the guys at Acorn to tell them and they agreed something was off but it's been an easy fix thankfully

It's been a long road on the electrics
