Help needed near High Wycombe

Post by kiwirob »

Hi All
I have a non-starter after multiple years of no use.
Stuart (Maxstu) has been brilliant coming from Kent to get me this far..Im not very mechanical..but thats a hell of a way and Im really grateful for his help.
We have changed the fuel pump and hoses. ECU and battery and spark plugs.
The van tries to start and has done with throttle but will not idle but really intermittent. Starting is really like holding your breath and praying.
Old fuel has possibly not all been removed.
Anyone close by to get me to the next stage?
Cheers

Have you changed the TCI unit? They can fail almost without warning, had this recently myself.
Got an extra earth braid from the LH head to the main engine harness earth bolt below the coil?
Are the earth ring terminals all good i.e. not green and crusty?
Also pull off the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator and check for fuel (split regulator diaphragm)
Have you bypassed the DIS (aka idle stabilizer/stab unit, ) by joining the plugs to eliminate?
The only other thing is the idle control unit which lives behind the OS rear light. They can be repaired, but at a price for the specialist knowledge.
There are four variants...suffix A or C are for Digijet, B or D for Digifant (I hope I have got that right!)

Thanks for the reply.
Where do I locate the TCI unit? I can’t find it in the Haynes.
I have cleaned the earth rings. Removed all the leads and cleaned them all.
I need to try to get the van level as it’s on a sloping drive to get the tappets working properly.

It looks like this. And it will be on the left hand side of your engine bay.

Rob's camper is rough running, has typical drained lifters' syndrome and no idle.

I suggested getting his camper on level ground (sloping driveway, van front down), removing very stale fuel and replacing fuel filter, oil and filter. It may well simply be the tappets need pumping up with freah oil

We cleaned all earth straps and wires in engine area, and Rob fitted new spark plugs before getting the camper running.

A faulty DIS, in my experience, tends to show itself when engine has been running for a short time. It manifests itself by engine cutting out when driving and dropping down to near idle. The engine fires up again almost immediately the ignition key is turned.
But no harm bypassing it.

If l can return in a couple of weeks', l will check timing and bring a spare TCI unit.

I will check the control unit behind offside rear light for terminal corrosion etc. But do not know of any test procedures

Might even be a faulty temp 2 sensor?
