if that does not work, it's very easy to pop the barrel out, remove the wafers and clean it all up before re-assembly. Once reasseblmed just check the rafers are flush with the barrel with the key inserted and you shoudl be good.

Ok, was looking at Haynes and Bentley about removing the barrel if needed. Is there anything that holds the barrel in place to stop it from moving?

I presume it's the same as a MK1 golf. Undoo the big screw at the back edge of the door. Slide the handle back and out.
Then a large screw to hold the lock lever to the barrel. Once undone, slide the barrrel out with the key inserted ( failure to do that could lead to wafers going walkies.)

Looking at a few pics online the lock lever may be pressed into place.. It's a 2 min job to find out though.
