Earth is pin 3 in the 14pin connector (brown wire)

Goes to the crown behind the fuse panel.

Radio, clock and interior lights are all on the same circuit, fed by the same fuse. I'd suspect it's something after the fusebox.
Has it had a "Westy wiring mod"?

Thanks for the information. Westy wiring mod? Not that l'm aware of. Whatever it is. :?

I still have this problem. Will try to sort it out soon now we have a little better weather.

Meanwhile, after successfully rebuilding the carb, setting up the choke properly, etc l now find the carb heater relay is faulty. Tried tapping on all sides, then removing cover and testing it with 12v across 87 and 30. Nothing. Time for a replacement

But the chock operates properly with one depress of throttle pedal. So one step forward etc!

Westy wiring mod was cutting the red wire out of the back of the central electrics that feeds the radio, the interior lights and the clock and giving it a new feed from the auxilliary  battery so you weren't in fear of flattening the battery when camping using the interior lights and the radio.

A few comments.

The radio earth is not by the fuse box, it runs straight down from the head unit and is on a stud on a dedicated stud on the tunnel, behind the central plastic heater vent.
It depends on how the head unit was wired, old vans, everyone has a different idea how to wire them. From the factory they never had an ignition feed, I prefer to add one in so the head unit comes on and off with the ignition, no chance of leaving it on then. I have a toggle switch by the column using a hole some clown drilled in the dashboard before I owned it, the toggle switch lets me turn the head unit on without ignition for camping.
On a Westy the Fluro lights in the back were run from the same circuit as the front courtesy lights hence the popularity of the mod.
The fag lighter is off the same fuse, fuse 3 but fed from a different connection on the back of the CE, clock and lights come from B12, the fag lighter is from B11.
I know you don't have a Westy but it was popular for owners of other T3 to also do the conversion especially as the leisure battery was usually under the left front seat and the CE was just a short cable under the carpet away!

First rule of fault finding problems on a T3, look for human interference! 

I used to quite like doing heater boxes on a T3 as you had the dash out and a perfect opportunity to put all the electrical bodges right, start again, safely!

Don't suppose you've got a Westie wiring diagram at all ??
My '83 has still got everything connected to the vehicle battery. Leisure is only running fridge, so kinda thinking on doing this mod - radio/kitchen light/fridge/propex (when I put it in) ect.
Also, got a couple of relays next to the leisure battery....the old teeny-tiny split charge was connected to it as well I'm assuming the fridge 12v system...which I want to connect to vehicle battery to use while driving to pre-cool before camping ect....can this be easily done ??

I'm a Sparks, but don't usually get involved with vehicles....from what I can see, pretty much most of the wiring/set up is original and not been dicked about with. The only bit that's been done is by me when I wired in a new stereo and split-charge relay 10 years ago and engine wiring (very minimal) when Mario did the Tdi swap.

Any help/advice/signposting would be very gratefully appreciated.

Diagram, sorry, not anything that isn't already on the internet.
Fridge, cool on mains, maintain whilst driving on 12v, camp on gas, don't try to cool on 12v as A) I don't think it should and B) sure fire way to flatten the battery.
Not sure how the early ones are wired, long time ago and seldom saw them, didn't do enough of them to remember.
usual thing, just follow the wires back, look at fuse listings to see what's run off each fuse, it won't be rocket science. As they are battery live they will be red with no trace.
Brown is earth.
Black is ignition live.
Black/yellow is stuff run from the relief relay.

I wired the radio ign. feed to the key in outlet of the ignition switch.
For beefier stereos you migt want to put in a relay to witch power with it.
