Cold start device (diesel 1.7) is this may problem?

Hi All,

1989 T25, have had all fuel pipes, filter replaced ,banjo bolt cleaned out, no air locks, no leaking of fuel….but…

So was looking at the cold start cable ( like a choke) and noted the bolt was popped out a bit,(see photo) and there is a little rubber seal on it, would this be causing be engine trouble ( runs and cuts out , almost like it fuel starved or drawing in air)

Sorry, I don't fully understand your question. I understand your engine is running poorly, can you elaborate on the symptoms and how it started doing this?

It could well be causing problems. It is a very long time since I replaced the o-ring on mine but I remember that it was difficult to get the lever back on the spindle so that it sat flush. I think that there was a flat on that spindle that the lever had to fit over then the lever sits close to the pump body. I would hazard a guess that someone has attempted to replace the o-ring and hasn't got the lever in the correct position. 
It isn't an easy job in situ, very fiddly but can be done. Make sure that you pack rags underneath to catch the nut that you will drop numerous times and have an onion picker for picking it up again!
If my memory serves me it was a case of put o-ring in position, get lever in correct position on spindle then add washer and nut. The difficulty is both access and the fact that the spindle disappears into the pump as you add the lever and nut, you have to hold/wedge the spindle out after the lever is in place so that the light pressure of the washer and nut going on doesn't cause it to move back in.

If that makes sense!

The engine starts, runs for a little while and slowly starts to loose power and stops.

This o-ring is for the cold start lever, lever work ok, just the bolt and o-ring popped out, pops back in again.

I have a video, if I can figure out how to post it

if theres an o ring its keeping fuel in and air out, that lever shouldnt really move out like that, need looking at, you may have to remove the pump

I think it should leak there if the shaft not sealing properly.
However if it is not sealing the housing pressure can be wrong and it may suck air in.

The cold start device gives more advance on start and low rpm
The engine should run without it but more rough.
