Fuel guage or sender not working
My 1982 2litre cu devon hasnt had a working fuel guage for a few years!! As I dont use LPG as much due to availability its time to sort out why the guage doesnt move. Is it the guage, how do I check, or is it the sender, and I have no intention of removing tank but want to cut an inspection access hole in the floor to get to sender. Can someonr show me where the hole needs to be cut I did have a photo someone posted but cant make out where hole is relative to the step and seat box, Thanks

Re: Fuel guage or sender not working
as per phone call here's the info based on a South African built van (in this case a Syncro so no fuel tank to get in the way when looking from below) with the access hole for the sender that they realised was a good idea
in this picture top is the left side chassis rail and left is the front of the van showing the step, picture taken lying on my back with camera under centre of van and my feet sticking out of the left side of the van if you want to put yourself in the same position and then do the visualisation before trying to transpose the measurements to the floor above

The access hole is roughly 10cm in diameter
it is in the rear compartment
on the left side of centre
and the centre of the hole is approximately 15cm from the inside (towards centre) of the left side front to back chassis member the wiring loom is clipped to and approximately 11cm rearwards of the upstand of the step for the centre walkway all as measured and pictured from below
hope this makes sense, because of floor coverings I can't easily access my inspection plate from above

Re: Fuel guage or sender not working

in this pic the bottom is front of van, left side shows the left side 'chassis' rail and the real outer 'crossmember', taken with head under cross member and feet out the left side of the van
on a 2wd the body is slightly different as there is the fuel tank rear support member between the chassis rails, but we don't have that on a Syncro but the chassis rails and the step are all the same so these should make sense

OK no power at sender unit, which fuse controlls fuel guage please
2 litre Aircooled 1982 RHD maybe its the guage how do I check it.

Hi there , did you sort your fuel gauge? Sorry I haven’t an answere for you but I have a similar issue and wondered is there a way to check the actual gauge in the dash. Hope you get sorted. Cheers Pete.

Re: Fuel guage or sender not working
Early Fuel Gauge Connections.
Pin 14 -9 = black ignition live to whole cluster.
Check for continuity to voltage regulator feed leg.
Pin 14 -8 = violet-black to fuel sender
Check for continuity to the gauge.
Pin 14 -5 = brown ground for the gauges.
Check for continuity to ground post of the regulator, and to ground.
Input side of the gauge - check for continuity from the output pin of the regulator.
There should be 10 volts coming out if of the regulator if checking voltage rather than continuity.
As you have an air cooled van, you do not have a temperature gauge, and so nothing to verify the state of the voltage regulator.
If you had working temp gauge but not fuel, then that infers a fault in the violet-black wire of the cluster circuit board.
All gauges being dead (no voltage) would point potentially to a duff voltage regulator.
The fuel gauge should be receiving 10 volts from the regulator.
Have you done a continuity test from each pin of the T14 connector as mentioned above to each pin on the back of the gauge and the voltage regulator.
If you do get a new regulator, please note that they should be fitted face down due to a different pin order.
Also to answer the original question...
I believe the ignition live is not fused, but feed via the ignition switch appears to come from fuse 9.

Re: Fuel guage or sender not working
Thanks guys for all the advise. I HAVE A WORKING FUEL GUAGE!!!
The answer was the 10v voltage stabiliser had gone, not only that but the circuit board where it attaches had disintigrated! The answer was to clamp the new voltage stabiliser into place, upside down as per Brickies advice as its a T4 unit the T3 one not being available, I
hard wired the left hand pin with a flexi wire to the connection on back of guage with a ring terminal and put a live feed to the other pin and hey presto it worked. The alternative was to buy a new circuit board for about £150. This cost me £3.60 + postage. A bonus was I had 1/2 tank of petrol!!!
