2.1 wbx... Making worrying noise when accelerating

Post by burnzdog »

Oh here goes again...

This seems to be a summer of one thing after another. Right, I posted up an issue few months back with regard an issue with the engine breaking down under load. At the time I bought a second dixxy to see if it was the hall sender which it was and this got refurbed and seem to do the job. I haven't used it since as I've been trying to resolve another issue with diff lock. However, I took it out at the weekend and stated to here a rather worrying, what I can only discribe as, crackling metallic sound coming from beneath the vehicle. It's not present on turn over, or when I rev whilst dormant, but can be heard when accelerating especially up hill.

I have to stay I may have heard it when I first changed the dizzy over.

I haven't had time to investigate and Im not sure where to start. But I can say that it was working OK and I haven't heard anything like this until I changed the dizzy.

It hasn’t been run for months , and now it’s making a rattling sound ?
Is it the tappets ?
Or if its only when its moving under load , check the drive shafts ?

No it has been used but not much... I think the issue appeared after the distributor was replaced. It may just be a coincidence and it's not related. I have visually checked the drive shafts, they aren't loose. I was thinking I've removing the prop shaft. When I have time I will also try and work out where the sound is coming from.

Maybe something not installed perfectly or some part got loose. It might be good to check that again and also look at the exhaust and driveshaft for anything wrong.

Is it a syncro? You mention diff lock and propshaft so it must be. A knackered cv joint can "click" under load so could that be it?
If the noise isn't present when stationary then its drivetrain related. Dissy swap is a red herring.

Crackling metallic sound doesn't sound like a description of a driveshaft/ propshaft noise. It could possibly describe pinking? That might fit with the dizzy swap...
What do you have the timing set to?

Is the rotor arm in the distributor seated right?

is the difflock definitely fully off ? If not then the castellations of the sliding collar and differential that interlock might be just touching, would change note with speed, and wouldn't sound stationary, and may change on tight turning as the differential turns around the central axis unequally

Hi Aidan,

Yeah it's defintely not engaged it was the first thing I thought of as I've been obviously working on that recently.

I had someone do the timing as I can't do myself but I'm not entirely convinced it was done right. What is pinking?

Yes they are, but I have noticed the new cap purchased from heritage I can see the rotor arm is cutting into side wall of cap. Not sure if this is a problem or could cause the noise being that it only happening under acceleration.

pre ignition - google it, could be timing is wrong.
Because the DJ uses mechanical and electronic retardation at idle (vacuum on disi actually retarding timing and Dls unit retarding the hall signal to the ignition amplifier) the correct procedure for setting the timing correctly is quite specific, but not difficult, and it is all in the manual, if you don't have the info it is all on Syncrosport website for free download.
Timing set up for MV is similarly, but differently specific, and a little odd as is done at higher revs

Id check the timing, I use a DG dissy on my DJ timing set to 10 degrees, no odd noises. Also had a powerspark fitted (which ill be selling) which was OK once I found the right rotor and cap for it so it didn't keep burning out rotor caps.

The noise deffo comes from the back of the van right?
Check the engine and gearbox mounts to see if they are good, you might be getting something catching, I know my exhaust catches the moustache bar sometimes and goes clunk clunk. But thats because the vans got a speedshop exhaust on it and probably a gearbox nose mount on the way out.

So it looks like it was timing, after having it adjusted the noise seems to have gone thankfully. I'm still think there is an issue, the engine seems to idle rough and wobbles almost like it's misfiring. I'm keen to get this running right so open to any suggestions and what I, can test myself. It may have to go to garage.

Probably not much help but here's a vid.
