Clutch slave cylinder
Hi everyone
I have a 1989 1.6 TD jx and have just had to change the starter motor.
It was a bit of a struggle to get the new motor in and levered the slave cylinder about to get the new starter in.
Starter works fine but clutch is solid and won't depress, it was fine before so asking for ideas of what I might have done or if you think it's unrelated.
Thanks in advance
Daz

Re: Clutch slave cylinder
You might have moved the plunger out from underneath it where the boot is.

Re: Clutch slave cylinder
As above or depending on how much “leverage” you gave it maybe the bracket is damaged.

Thanks " stesaw " and "jrt"
I think the plunger part is OK but probably needs changing as the boot is damaged, also a good chance I've bent the bracket one way or tuther.
I will try and have a better look over the weekend.

Re: Clutch slave cylinder
Bending the bracket wouldn't do all that much, I've done that with mine and its fine as the plunger just sits on the end of the cylinder, whats probably happened is that plunger has fallen off the cup and is sitting on the lip. Or the plunger cup isn't sitting on the arm correctly on the ball

Re: Clutch slave cylinder
Quick update
The plunger seems to be sitting where it should be so I'm still at a loss as to what to do next.
As I can't depress the clutch to put it in gear I can't even drive to a garage.
Anyone have anything else i should check/try
Thanks

Re: Clutch slave cylinder
with a pry bar and some force you should be able to push the lever arm and push rod up, if you can't then maybe there's an issue with either the slave or the clutch fork/release bearing
what position is the lever arm resting at, should be in the 10 o'clock position ish, and move to the 9 o'clock ish position when pedal is pressed and pushrod extended
you do have the lugs of the starter between the bellhousing and the slave bracket don't you ? You shouldn't have needed to lever anything really, the starter should rotate so the lug clears the bracket and can then be withdrawn
some pics would be a help diagnosing the issue

Re: Clutch slave cylinder
can you push the pushrod up or the lever arm and the push rod up ?
It looks like it is fully extended
Can you engage gears with the engine running, but have no drive ? ie you can put it into 1st engine off, start engine and still be able to engage 1st gear ?

Re: Clutch slave cylinder
I've tried to move it up but it won't budge.
I can select gears with the engine off but not tried starting while in gear or selecting a gear with engine on.

Re: Clutch slave cylinder
slave looks in pretty poor nick, split boot means corrosion, so piston may now be seized; I'd be looking at replacing it - if you can start the engine with it in gear then definitely wants replacing, if you can't pull the lever off to pop pushrod off the nipple then you can't check if the release bearing is moving to and fro

Re: Clutch slave cylinder
So just had go at starting the van while in gear.
Nothing, can put it in and out of all gears without trying to pull away.
So I'm guessing you are right and it is stuck in dipped clutch position.
I will try and get the piston rod off and see if I can move the arm manually. Guessing if I can it's nothing more serious than a new slave cylinder.
