!EMERGENCY! SHIPPING TOMORROW - worrying tapping from torque converter on my auto.

Post by DJKING360 »

Hey team.

I have a worrying tapping noise coming from my torque converter. In slow motion it look like it has a wobble.

I can cruise on the accelerator no problem but when I come off I’m hit with a worrying loud rattle that shakes the engine on her mounts and rattles through the van.

I’m currently parked near Just campers and due to load the van in Southampton tomorrow, bound for the USA for my honeymoon. I drove from east London to hampshire other than the tapping all is fine.

Does anyone have any insight into the rogue noise? Does anyone live near just campers (Odiham, Hampshire) that would like to see and help.

I suspected exhaust initially because it was new. I’ve righted the whole system up and it’s fine.

I have videos but I’m unsure on how to post.

Thank you in advance.

Mine does make a similar tapping. But quietly.
Does it vibrate the van if revved in neutral or park.
Are mentioned it could be a rogue driveshaft.

Yeah it vibrates and shakes in idle too.
Especially after moving.

I hope they investigate it asap, this is no way to start a honeymoon in their van.

I met with Dan at Clacket's on the M25. Then continued supporting him by Whatsapp massaging later in the day, when he camped overnight near JK's just off M3.
Two concerns were found. Too much fluid in the transmission (about one cm above top mark) and the mating between bellhousing and engine not fully home, perhaps causing the converter to slightly wobble.
He got the camper to Southampton port and it should be sailing the big pond as l type.

Too much atf needs further investigation.
Was it added in error (poor dipstick technique, checking cold, not running etc)?
If not, could be oil cooler trouble, or mixing of migrated gear oil from final drive.
If he has further troubles over there, at least he's in auto-land.

Tranny oil looked okay. Incorrect replacement procedure leading to overfill is my opinion.
suggested to OP to remove excess and join The Samba.
Does the vent play a part here?

Van is on the ship heading west.
Stu has given me troubleshooting list and I’ll run through them when I’ve got my mrs with me over there.
It was difficult to sort by the side of the road alone. I’ve got a trust 30mm spanner now too ☺️

Really hoping it’s the easy fix and atf removal and top up to the correct level. The rest will take a little more time. I have spare fluid and gasket in the van ready for arrival.

We’re attending a transporter even in Boston in October, I’ll limp in to the event to make sure she’s seen to by the “pros”.

Really hoping everything works out.

Thanks for the support and all further advice has been noted too. 😀
