Cheers Steve, lve tested two that way and both failed to get hot. It should be immediate surely?

Thanks for the info. Its the testing that is causing a headache.
I would have thought when adding 12 volts one could feel warmth from it. Yet nothing on two lve tested, and a third tested by another forum user gave same result.

It's not just for cold starting, but an anti-icing heater during warm-up phase, and it is beneficial in the UK in some weather conditions. Best tested by measuring resistance - don't know what it should be but if there is any reading (continuity) it's probably ok.

Sounds odd that 3 tested all failed to heat up.

I refurbbed 2 Pierburgs last summer which was 'fun' - but the right thing to do as now the van starts up well and runs well. I bought the spare on ebay to learn and then sold it on when it was refurbbed. (BTW Mocki saved my a$$ with sending me a spare resin choke piece to replace the orig that broke when disassembling the carb. Now that was a nightmare. Thanks Mocki!!!)
But I didn't bother to test either of the pre-heaters...
Maybe someone else has an idea of testing and/or failure rates? I did note that the wiring on the pre-heater looked easily broken/hard to repair.

All three tested good for continuity.
I left one connected to 12volts for five minutes. Thats a long time to watch and hold expecting a burnt thumb at any second. Nothing happened.

Ok, I was intrigued so I tested a couple. Both measured 3.9 Ω when cold. Then connected up to a 12V battery via a 3A fuse (blew instantly, good, we have current) then via a 5A which didn't blow (good again, that is as expected) and waited a few minutes to warm up. Measured with Infrared thermometer, and thumb. Both results confirmed it's bloody hot! Conclusion: there's something wrong with yours.

Thanks for the info Andrew. Will try two again, with a fuse this time.
This all came about when a forum user put an ad in Wanted for one. He got not results testing as above so assumed it was duff. I found two in loft and tested with 12v only to get same results. No heat!
Will test again just out of interest.
