Steering Hum

Post by georgeartcoll »

Hi all, I’m currently on holiday in Europe and a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that whenever I turned to the right beyond a certain point, I could hear a low humming noise, along with feeling it in the steering wheel. The steering feels like it’s vibrating ever so slightly, not enough to shake or anything like that, but I definitely feel it, and the noise persists until I turn the wheel back to the centre. Sometimes, this can switch from the right side to the left side, but it mainly occurs when I steer to the right. It also seems affected by how fast I’m going, as the humming will be quiet when I’m going slow, louder around the 30-50 mph mark, and then will get slightly better at motorway speeds. It’s not overly loud; my girlfriend doesn’t even notice it when she’s driving, she agrees there is a noise, but it’s not REALLY bad if you get what I mean. I initially thought it was my front right wheel bearing, so I got it changed at a specialist garage in Grenoble, they even checked my other bearings and confirmed they were ok, but the sound and slight vibration still persist. The steering doesn’t seem to be altered in any way while it’s making the noise, just that feeling in the steering wheel and humming, which is definitely coming from the right front side of the van. The van is a 1991 T25 right-hand drive 1.9 water-cooled, just for the record. I guess the main thing I’d love to know is if the van is safe to drive, and if I should continue to drive it like usual, but monitor it, checking to see if it’s getting worse. I’ve done about 1.5k miles now, and the issue hasn’t become more prevalent. Back in the UK, the day before I left, I got the tires balanced. Maybe it could be something to do with that? As I don’t recall the issue being as bad before. Suspension? Brakes? Steering? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

Just thought I’d ad, it’s always only one side, one side will make the noise and vibrate, while the other won’t.

It might seem daft but is there a pipe in the way when you are turning? I had a noise and it was the wheel rubbing on the pipe that goes to the underslung water tank.
Other than that I would get the front end in the air and give it a good inspection with someone turning the wheel checking for play in anything.
