What size speakers?

Post by windydubber »

Hi,
What size speakers can you fit into the door cards? I am replacing the door cards so can cut fresh holes and fit new speakers!
Cheers

They're not the greatest place to mount them in my view. I put some big ones under the dash and they sound superb. More room under there than you might think. A thought anyway.

Admittedly this is easier with dash out, but if you plan to replace blower unit in warmer weather, thats the best time to do it. When I first touted this suggestion, some felt the sound would be lost. This has not proved to be the case and I get a more full 'sumtuous' sound than I ever got from speakers in door cards which always get damaged. Mine are bolted down on brackets fairly close to dash vents. I had originally planned to also fit tweeters above dash level but never needed them. The blower box (with the volume of space it occupies) also seems to keep the two channels nicely seperated. Other than that I have no idea why it should work - it just does.

Good info.
Do you have any photos?
How big are the speakers and are 2 /3 way or just plain Jane round ones?

Having to think where I got them. They appeared at a boot sale of all places - square pods (very 80s) with a hinged tweeter on top that you could angle but any self contained unit that isn't Binatone quality would do the job. They don't rattle at all unless I reach complete max on the stereo so thats fine for me. They came with small brackets fortunately. All I did was tilt the tweeters upwards - I guess this finds its way through the may gaps and holes in the dash and since humans can't detect point of origin below 50Hz anyway, they work brilliantly. Stereo image seems good. I suppose some must bounce off windscreen so maybe thats why it works. Passengers can never figure out where the sound is coming from. Makes it neat as nothing shows.

The original position required speakers with a low profile grille to avoid the window winder handle.

Doors are a terrible environment for speakers really. They tend to accumulate water through condensation and the shape is all wrong as an enclosure.

Original ones in the door cards are 100mm. The previous owner has enlarged the holes and put 130mm speakers. So now the window winder hits the grille. And also it is rubbing the dashboard when door closed.

The previous owner of my van stuck huge 1980s speakers in the doors and cabinets, problem being that there are no speakers available in this day and age that are this size!
I made my own door cards and put 6x9s in the lower section of the door cards. To be honest the sound is now pretty low down and not as good as it could be, had I known about the under dash option I think I would have tried that... Maybe next time!
Hope you manage to sort something that works for you!

I have 130mm and tweeters in the top of the doors below the quarterlight and 100mm dual cones in the back in the cupboard above the seat. These do the job but I am considering a sub under the dash or a pair of 6x9's in the bottom of the doors as well as a pair of tweeters in the back. The pioneer 130mm's I have are good but slightly lack deep bass response in fact the pioneer 100's in the back sound quite similar to the 130's and claim a response from 35 HZ but you can't FEEL-IT.

How do you get 6x9s in the lower door card?

I've just checked and mine won't fit without cutting the door hole bigger.

I have a pair of 6" x 9" in my front doors using spacers, also have two 8" subs under rear seat. Sounds pretty good to me.
Spacers available on Ebay similar to the ones i used.

Hi, these (see photo) we recommended to me by a sound engineer that works for film studios in Los Angeles. Note it is not JBL, but JL Audio. I had never heard about this brand before and thought JL Audio were cheap knock offs of JBL. But couldn't be more wrong, it's a very good brand, same level as B&W, KEF, Cambridge Audio.

I fit 1 in each door and 2 at the back where the factory speakers are. They fit like a glove, no mods or drilling, and the sound is amazing. Probably the best speaker set up for a T3.

My stereo is the Pionner AVH-Z7100-DAB, it's 1 DIM (so fits as replacement for factory stereo without mods) and has touch screen with Android Auto and Apple car. Also probably the best stereo you can fit on a T3. This has connections for a subwoofer without having to install an amplifier, and a crossover. I don't have the subwoofer yet, but use the cross over to trim frequencies that are below what the speakers can play.

With a dialed in equalization, the van sounds better than my BMW i3, which has Bowers & Wilkins speakers.
