Going heading up to the van in half hour so I have a nice list of jobs.

Strip,clean and reassemble so is the big job, I will report back when it goes horribly wrong .

Is it alright to clean and then paint the drum itself with hammerite/rustoleum paint if it's reusable?

Yes you can paint the outside of the drum.

It won't make much difference usually as the drum is pretty much hidden behind the road wheel.

Should there be pad on the lower part of the shoe? There is on the front shoe but not the back shoe

There is meant to be an area without the friction material.
So that looks okay to me.

Thanks Robsey, I appreciate all the time you've taken to answer my questions. Both back wheels are spinning away fine now,no sign of stiffness like I had yesterday.

Must bleed brakes tomorrow when I get the eezibleed kit and then bring the van to the welder for a tiny job and gingers crossed it will pass the cvrt then

Has the apparent gearbox / differential noise gone?
Or is it still there, but things are a lot easier to turn.

I would expect the latter - noise but easier.
Otherwise a lack of noise now would have me confused.

With or without the noise - as long as the wheels spin when they should, and stop when they should, that is what counts.

Yup the noise is still there, but its on both rear wheels so that is reassuring....or frightening. But ya it is a lot easier to turn and both sides feel they are turning with the same ease. Originally I could barely turn the back right wheel to move even with the wheel on, it felt as if the brakes were engaged but now it spins not a bother. I'm just happy I think I have everything they pointed out sorted except a bit of welding or fiber glass cover up.

The noise is still there -
Cool that makes perfectly good sense.

As for frightening - do not worry -
It just so happens that I had been stripping my 091 DT 4 speed box a week or so ago, ready for fitting gaskets and seals.
As soon as I heard the noises on the 2nd and 3rd videos, I recognised them as being the same sound that I was hearing when I was turning the drive flanges.

Just as a final follow up to this thread, I bled the brakes earlier and took big blue for a spin. Brakes worked anyway which was great , used the Gunson eezieed to do it, best 20 quid I've ever spent like.

Getting tracking and alignment done tomorrow since I changed track rods and have a guy doing a tiny bit of welding on Monday and then hopefully will get an early cvrt test at some point next week and hopefully that will pass. Then on to the interior I go.
