Just a final note to say I got the plate adjusted eventually with a click at idle and full throttle. Fired her up and ticks over smoothly on idle. Will take her for a spin tomorrow to confirm all ok.

Thanks all for your support, I’ve learnt a lot about the idle on my T25, and saved some money in resolving the problem myself. Hopefully someone else with the same problem in the future can make use of all the valuable advice too.

cheers all  :ok

I'm near Builth so Camperhaus bit of a trek, but could consider if we are heading that way :ok .

I’m not far from Builth, near Abergavenny, also just got a 2.1l auto. Be interested to hear if you find any local ish VW gurus/mechanics! I’ve been looking but they all seem a bit of a trek (last thing you want if you’ve got an issue)! 👍🏻

Not found anyway yet. I have booked it into a garage in Builth to look at timing and points as she is being troublesome starting. But she does idle nicely now…lol.

I did explain to the garage that the ignition system is complex, so I’ll wait and see what happens next week  :D

Starting issues most likely tired ignition switch and or tired solenoid contacts on starter motor. The cheap Cchinese made aftermarket starters aren't great. I put a WOSP on and the difference is night and day. If you can find a Bosch electrical refurbisher still trading and still with stock of parts for our starter then happy days but Bosch no longer offer refurbished starter motors.
