WBX Cylinder Head Nuts Question.

Post by maxstu »

Clean up or replace with new? What should l be looking for. A new set costs over 100 quid.
I've misplaced the original set l removed from my 2.1 DJ. But have these from a totally overheated and ragged 1.9 DG.
Funds are tight now. Yet not willing to jepardise my rebuilt DJ.
What to do? Head says don't compromise. Empty wallet shouts use them.

They stink of burnt oil!

First one cleaned up...

Thread okay.

I mean, if you've cleaned them up and the threads are good I'd use them. I reused mine after cleaning them up and god knows what horrors they witnessed through their lives.

Clean threads are essential. Each nut should run freely all the way down the stud until it bottoms. If so, use them.
I rarely buy new ones, as 90% are perfectly usable. I clean them in an ultrasonic bath, blow them out with an airline, de-rust and paint outside with enamel paint, then check for smoothness and check again before using. Any snicks or grittiness when spinning them on, and they're rejected (but I have the luxury of a bucket full).

I spent a leisurely afternoon cleaning the rest of these cylinder head nuts.

There's some shiny stuff under all that crud.

Image

All cleaned using a cheap cordless drill and this attachment. Three nuts out of picture.

Image

Each nut run down and up a few times on this lubricated tap post, then again down a bolt with matching thread to clean out more dirt. All nice and smooth.

Image

Image

Finished with a good clean of the mating surface, using different grades of emery paper.

Image

Cleaned out threads with kitchen roll and stored in a container. Four are being used to clamp sleeves in engine.

Before use they will get a dip in meths and dried with a lint-free cloth.

Stuart
