Expansion Tank?

Post by fresco3000 »

Few weeks before Xmas I was out in the van and it began to fill with what my wife screamed 'smoke'!

Has been sat up until I've had a dry day to examine it properly. Just ran it for a few mins and indeed it appears to be steam spouting out of the expansion tank (slight relief). See pic, what am I missing where the vapour is coming out? Is that plugged or should there be a hose there?

From what I can see on this diagram it's a plug? Anyone know part number?

Found the cracked one lying by the rear lights. It is indeed  the Coolant Level Switch (Push-On Plug).

I would also examine why it popped out in first place, also do you have a hose connected from the dalek cap to the other tank to allow for coolant expansion.

Looks like the remnants of radseal or similar compound, system needs a good flush either way.

Yes that is the coolant level sensor - you figured it iot fine.
However that debris in coolant is not looks nicw.
Probably different types of coolant were mixed. Would worth to clean and flush the system.

Coolant should be clear, rad weld, horse "pooh" needs cleaning out.

Get parts from BW.

Clean water in, holts coolant system cleaner. flush 3 times, drain, add 8L neat coolant, top with water, happy bleeding.

The state of that sensor is embaressing!

Sensor was stuck in beside the tail lights, had been for some time it seems so some dirt may be from there. It's prob the original one, the plastic had become brittle and the thread section cracked. Got a new one yesterday and replaced along with fresh fluids.

Here we go….

Drove a few minutes and it started to overheat.

No visible water leaks and fluid levels all good.

Thoughts?

Bleed it properly. Follow the BW guide.

Did you clean the system fully or just top it off.

When this happened on mine it was the head gasket letting by and over pressure in the system, worth having a sniff test done at your local garage for combustion gasses in the coolant
