Telescopic pushrod tube dilema

Post by aec »

I finally got round to sorting my pushrod tubes that have been leaking oil since soon after I got the van (14 years back).  A while back I bought a set of new Scat telescopic tubes because I'd always assumed without actually looking that it would have the original basic tubes.

After getting the covers off I discovered it already has a set of telescopic tubes.  The previous owner had applied a load of sealant around the joints (no doubt to cover up the leaks long enough to sell the van)  The sealant made getting the old tubes out very difficult, but I persevered and have removed them all from one side.  They're in reasonable shape but obviously not new.

Just wondering if anyone has any strong opinions whether the OEM ones are far superior to cheaper ones like the Scat tubes (which have three very thin o ring seals compared to two chunkier o rings on the VW tubes)

So I'm weighing up whether I'd be better to give the old tubes another go with some fresh seals and o rings, or stick the new shiny gold Scat ones in... thoughts?

I like the scat ones. Never had one leak (apart from a cracked one new out the pack, replaced under warranty).

I’ve had the scat ones fitted for just over two years without any problems. They’re the shiniest things on the van :)
