Starter Motor Wiring (What should this look like?)

I just cleaned and rebuilt my diesel starter motor (new brushes, bush, and solenoid).

I was hoping it would sound a bit more powerful, but it sounds like it turns the engine over pretty much the same as before (a little sluggish). It still works, but I was hoping for a bigger improvement. The battery I use is a new 800CCA one too.

I checked and cleaned the gearbox and engine bay my earths this morning, still no change. I may add an earth strap to the starter as advised in another post.

Anyway, I'm wondering what the wiring should look like on the back of the starter motor? Mine has obviously been bodged in the past with a smaller wire. Anyone have any pictures?

No need to earth direct to the starter, just add a new engine earth somewhere.
If the brushes are new, the motor might improve a little over time as the brushes bed in.

This won't improve your starter performance, but it needs doing - replace that chocolate block with a proper waterproof connector, and ideally put an insulated spade terminal on the end, too. A bit of vibration / weather and it'll definitely let you down as it is. Terminal strip like that has no place on a vehicle, and absolutely 100% definitely not on the outside of a vehicle.

Any advice on where to add an earth and with what connectors? (I'm no electrician!).
What type of connector would you recommend to replace the chocbox too?

I've seen pictures where there are 2 space connectors that go onto the solenoid? Do you know if that is correct?
