The original front to rear plastic pipes seem so strong it make me think the metal inserts are not needed, i have some new vw pipes and was thinking of trying to remove the metal to stop the rusting problem, they are made in south africa  and look a bit different in construction though.

really ? they were moulded into the plastic when they were made actually providing the necessary rigidty and a form for the lip to be moulded onto, afaik; they rot from the inside, crack the plastic, weep coolant so people replace the original spring clips which are very specifically sized and use jubilees (which are slightly D shaped due to the mechanism so they still weep), squeeze them tighter and tighter till they break the plastic tube and the two parts separate; virtually all the original send pipes I have seen have suffered from this and a lot of the return pipes too, usually at the radiator end

Thanks for all your help. Took a lot of huffing and puffing but managed to drive the crush inserts home and get the hose on. It still doesn't slip on as far as the oem hose but more than enough to seal and secure to the pipe. We will now commit to brass inserts or stainless pipes but this keeps it rolling around while we continue the resto
