Two to Four Headlights Wiring Diagram Required

Post by maxstu »

I have bought the twin square headlamps with grill conversion. At present running standard single round lights. So whats the best and safest way to wire in the inner lights to come on when using full beam?
No wiring loom with twin lamp version. Nothing in Wiki either.

You'll be talking relays to take a full new feed to the new lamps. Use one of the existing high beam feeds by the original lamps as the trigger, tee'd off. You can simplify making the loom by buying a fog light loom from eBay, just check the wire lengths. I bought an excellent quality set when I did the fog lights, just search 'fog light loom'.

Thanks. Was worried about the quality buying ready made from eBay. Slaughterhouse Customs do a conversion kit for 65 quid. Would prefer to make my own really.
So two 40amp relays. Piggy back power and earth between the two.. No fuse required. Power from high beam wire. Trigger from high beam lever piggy backed to both relays.

I forget where I got my loom for my SA lights but it goes right from the battery to the lights, plugs into the old loom. Pretty much just plug and play.

I converted the original two lamp headlights to the Four type many years ago.  Pretty sure I only needed the original wiring for each Headlight filament separated and then connected them to the Inner and Outer - repeat for both sides.   It took me longer to mod the lip to accept the Twin Headlight assembly and remove the dim dip resistors.

Shortly after I added Two Relays and fed the Main Beam and Dipped seperately and directly from the Battery with a fuse located close to the battery.   Each Relay is triggered by  the original headlight feed from the fuse box - quite simple really.  If I recall correctly, the Offside and Nearside Headlights have their own feed from the fuse box  - two feeds per headlight (One for dipped the other for Main Beam) each feed has its own fuse so no need to add another), you only need to use one pair and the other pair can be disconnected from the fuse box.

I placed my relays behind the cosmetic panel under the dash rather than behind the Grille.

Make some protectors too.....Twin Headlights cost a fortune now but Acrylic is cheap .  PM Me if you want more info regards the little brackets that hold the Acrylic protectors.

Thanks to all for the great information.
A bit of a dilemma. I paid for it through eBay. The seller claimed they were RHD lamps. When l got to his house today l saw they were actually LHD. He said they came off a RHD camper...
I explained by being LHD they are not worth the same as genuine RHD versions. So we agreed a price refund of fifty quid and l took them.
Is there any MOT issues to consider? I see plenty of left hookers T3's driving about.

It all helps... :ok

Though not sure why l bought them really. The twins do enhance the vehicles' look.

You have to mask the lenses to stop the kick up of the beam to the right, RHD should kick up to the left, so you end up with a flat beam which doesn't illuminate road signs very well.
The original twin lights were just daisy chained from the outer lamps.

I had rhd squares, and to be honest they do not do such a good job as rounds , they are only a part parabolic , where as rounds are full parabolic . I went back to rounds
Yes the squares look good, look more modern , but for seeing with , the rounds win .
Make sure you are getting as near to full alternator output voltage at the bulbs as you can , every 0.5v drop reduces light out put by something like 30% iirc.
Vw used too thin a wire through a switch in those days , and adding the relays is the single biggest improvement you can make
Best £10 i ever spent buying those relays and wires when it comes to nighttime driving .

Thanks for the info, Steve.
TBH, despite this voltage drop on full beam, l always though the standard round lights on my camper were very (ex Fiat X1/9 owner :rofl ) acceptable.
In fact, all lights front and back are really bright.
MOT aside (a non issue apparently) l think they were priced about right for LHD genuine Hella's with grill at 250 quid. All in excellent condition. Yet camping money down the drain.
What to do?
