Adding a trip computer

Post by ndugu »

I have a 1981 a/c t25 and would like to add a speedo with a trip computer so that i can record distances on trips. Is it a possibility to do this and is it just a case of replacing the complete display panel?
Thanks
Phill

I wasn't thinking about something as hi-tec as GPS. I wondered if it was possible to have one of the trip computers that are normally under the speedo on that dial. In the Haynes book it showed that there is one on the later models.
So I was wondering if you could take one from a van being broken and then supplement it for the older one?
Thanks Kev

You can just fit another speedo, but it involves a bit of delicate work and drilling the front perspex for the trip reset.
Much better to fit complete panel

Er, i don't think they're called trip computers, are they. Trip meter, trip odometer - a computer computes things, this just rolls up the miles till it's reset?

Bit of the old charge cooler syndrome creeping in :)

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word "computer" was first used to describe a mechanical calculating device in 1897.

odometer adds up total mileage, which is a calculation , ergo is a computer

Good point, well put, Ade.

You're such a disruptive influence on here, Clive. Attacking newbies, too. It's disgusting. Tsk.

Ndugu, I have what you're after here in Bristol, it's a complete 2WD binnacle, but the speedo head and glass could be removed and swapped out for yours, I'm sure.

But in the nicest possible way

and I computed it was a risk worth taking that you'd do your normal crowing act :)

Ade's right, its a display device for a mechanical counter, which is a computer. But if this is coming into modern parlance for simple meters and counters, we'll have..

Lovely Rita, computer maid.. (doesn't quite cut it, even 40 years later...

Knock, knock... 'Ah Good Morning, British Gas, can I just pop my head around the door and read your computer?'

Whilst a taxi's meter is a bit more than a simple counter these days, so that might entail... 'Now look, the computer's running, I can't wait at the kerb all night while you dance the night away...'

etc.

Ch.. Ch... Ch... Changes... just an observation!

Just tried this, glass came out in lots of pieces. And I was very careful, took my time over it . It was so well stuck I am still trying to get the last bits out.

No matter, I have what the poster requires and it's probably less than 20miles from where he is.
